John Muir was onto something when he said, “In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.” Hikers battle bug bites, blisters and bruises for the sake of overcoming a challenge and enjoying some quality time with nature. When we talk about hiking, there are exotic places that people aren’t aware of that exists in Indonesia. Even Indonesians aren’t aware of these places because we really haven’t explored the country to it’s core. Here are the top three unknown great hikes in Indonesia.
Lake Toba, Sumatra:
Here’s the best thing about this place, their hospitality is the best. The only thing that you need to say is “Horas” which is their traditional Batak greeting. It’s not really about the hike here, the place itself has an incredible view. There are tourist attractions that are for shopping, waterfalls, restaurants and an area called Hot Spring where you can go for a slight dip because the water is kinda hot.

The 120-metre tall Sipiso-Piso waterfall (located at the North side of Lake Toba) won’t fail to impress both photographers and nature lovers. Even from the parking lot of the trail, the views are amazing.

2. Mount Rinjani, Lombok:
They say this is one of the most best hikes located in that area, and it’s not going to be an easy ride. There are different routes when going up and there should be a guide recommending which route to take, as the weather can bring some challenges to the hikers. At the top, trekkers are rewarded with views of the crater lake called Segara Anak. If the day is clear, views can extend outwards to around the entirety of Lombok island and even to Bali.

3. Puncak Jaya, Papua Province:
Snow-capped Peaks and Glaciers in the Tropics, the most toughest hikes that involve a four day trip that requires you to stay there at different base camps each night. Puncak Jaya and its neighbors are some of the only peaks in Indonesia where snow is regularly seen. Yeah, we know what you’re thinking, it does snow in Indonesia.

This hike requires you to be fit as possible, because it won’t be easy peasy. Guides, porters and adequate planning is required for this hike. Puncak Jaya is commonly referred as the seventh peak by climbers. And the best part is when you reach the top, you are literally above the clouds.
